Order of the Arrow
The Order of the Arrow serves as Scouting's National Honor Society. More than 176,000
members strong, the Order recognizes Scouts and Scouters who best exemplify the
Scout Oath and Law in their daily lives. The OA can help strengthen troops by
providing leadership training and opportunities for OA members and by assisting
in summer camp promotion, camporees, Scout shows, and other activities.
The Purpose of the Order of the Arrow
The purpose of the Order of the Arrow is fourfold:
- To recognize those scout campers who best exemplify the Scout Oath and Scout Law
in their daily lives.
- To develop and maintain camping traditions and spirit.
- To promote scout camping.
- To crystallize the Scout Habit of Helpfulness into a life purpose of leadership in
cheerful service to others.
Becoming a Member
Scouts are elected to the Order by their fellow unit members, following approval by
the Scoutmaster. To become a member, a youth must be a registered member of a Boy Scout
troop and hold first class rank. The youth must have experienced fifteen days and
nights of Boy Scout camping during the two-year period prior to election.
Adult Selection is based on their ability to perform the necessary functions to help
the Order fulfill its purpose, and is not for recognition. Selected adult Scouters
must be an asset to the Order because of demonstrated abilities, and provide a positive
role model for the youth members of the lodge.
The Nacha Nimat Lodge
The Order of the Arrow operates locally through lodges. The Nacha Nimat Lodge is the
local chapter is the local chartered organization of the Order of the Arrow is tied
directly to the Hudson Valley Council. The Lodge was formed in 1996 after the merger
of Skanando Lodge #64, Nooteeming Lodge #443, and Munsi Lodge #444. The merger
committee decided on the name Nacha Nimat meaning “three brothers.” This name
represents the lodges that merged to make the newly formed lodge. Though its history
is brief, the parent lodges have histories to be proud of and Nacha Nimat is living up
to the high traditions of its parent lodges.
The Lodge has earned many awards within the section and has been declared a Quality
Lodge for 2004. The lodge operates the Order of the Arrow Program of service and
leadership within the Council boundaries and has over 500 members.
Nacha Nimat Lodge Mission
The mission of the Lodge is to achieve the purpose of the Order of the Arrow as an
integral part of the Boy Scouts of America in the council through positive youth
leadership under the guidance of selected capable adults.
